Hi! I'm sorting through 80-plus Norddeutscher Postbezirk 1 Groschen stamps, and haven't been able to find much information about them.

Some of the stamps are lighter in color than the others. Are there different varieties, or is the difference due to environmental conditions? I photographed 4 of them together to show what I mean.

In addition, a handful of the stamps aren't perforated and seem to have raised surfaces (second photo). Did someone wreck this stamp with careless cutting, or were there imperforate ones?

As to the imperforates, be aware that there were 1 Groschen Rose postal stationery envelopes with this design. The envelopes were overprinted Ein Groschen Post-couvert, but often these did not run through the stamp itself. Someone may have clipped these close to lose the overprint and give the impression that they are adhesives not PS cutouts.

There were two issues of the 1 Groschen stamp. The first ,as already mentioned, is Michel #4, issued Jan 1 1868 rouletted 8½ -11½. The second issue was in Jan 1869, Michel #16, & is perf. 13¾:14¼. Michel states that both issues have shades & both catalogue @ 2 euros used.

Michel #4 is available imperf & is catalogued @ 150 euros mint, no mention of used but a note that you're going to need serious margins to prove that it's really imperf & not just cut down.

In any case it's not an imperf #4 you've got but a cutout from a pre-printed envelope that came out at the same time. I've blown your pic up to show more clearly the two diagonal lines of overprints in grey which run across the indica. they read EIN GROSCHEN POST - COUVERT. Quite easy to overlook if you don't know they're there. My ancient Michel Postal Stationery catalogue has the envelope @25 marks used, so I don't think the cutout is worth much, I'm afraid.

I wouldn't do that before checking out the postmarks.

Thanks for the advice, YeaPolska.

These are the only other Norddeutscher Postbezirk 1 Groschen cut-outs I have.

Is there an online resource for determining which German postmarks are of particular interest?

The "DEN" could be Dresden, fairly common & in poor shape.. Buckeburg is a nice SON cancel & I'd be keeping it just for that - HOWEVER - I'm not convinced it's a cutout but rather a poorish roulette which makes it Scott #4 not #16, the rouletting wasn't the greatest on these issues.

There is an online resource & it's discussed here- https://goscf.com/t/11550

Thanks, there are some great resources in that thread!

The first photo shows the back of the Buckeburg stamp. The perforated stamps don't have raised letters/indentations; does that confirm that it's a cutout from postal stationery?

The DEN could also be from Wiesbaden (second photo below) or Minden (top left photo).

Yup, you're right on both counts, couldn't see the embossing from the front & I'd just perused some Dresden cancelations which is why I had that city on my mind
