I recently found the Postage Due Plate Block. The pink background behind the "3 cent" appears to be missing. I have provided a normal plate(on the left) for comparison purposes. Any information on this? Thanks Bob

Hi Bob! Interesting. But as you probably know, postage due stamps had little (if any) quality control since they were to be for PO use only. For example, note how the '3' of the bottom right stamp are sitting quite a bit higher than the other '3's. It will be interesting to see if anyone else has seen the white background like your block. I always thought that these stamps were printed in two stages; the red part is basically the same for all postage dues in this series, the black was entered later, in a second run. Now, there has to be something for Bob's observation because the red is much deeper in the right stamps. The background should have been more vivid also?

Quote: note how the '3' of the bottom right stamp are sitting quite a bit higher than the other '3's. There are some positional varieties like this that are collected by specialists. As for the nearly missing bckground, I don't have any insight. |

Interesting! The Durland Plate Number Catalog I have gives no premium or special notation to plate 35283. Since the red frame and background were printed separately from the black denomination, it would be worth looking at other denominations with this same plate number to see if the "missing background" is consistently missing on all of them. |

Here is a closeup of the corner of plate 35283, which clearly shows the background lines are present on this plate. |

Very fine lines on printing plates tended to wear down over extended runs. Perhaps the 3 cent plate block was printed towards the end of the life of plate 35283. |

I agree GregAlex. I was really hoping that Bobplates or somebody else would be able to post a scan like John Becker shows above. That would really show what the background looks like.

Unfortunately my scanner is out of action. I took the photo with the macro setting of my camera. Note that I have another one of these plates(same number) in the upper right position. I will try to post a more detailed image.
