All, Sorry - but as this is my first post and I am having little luck in connecting with the local stamp world I am going to ramble a bit.

I collected U.S. stamps from around 1970 until the mid 80s when life interrupted. My Dad collected U.S. from the 30s until he passed away a couple of years ago. His collection encompassed EVERYTHING - plate blocks, sheets, first day covers, commemorative panels, etc. Although he still continued to buy from the USPS Philatelic service he did not organize anything for many years so I have box after box of "stuff" to sort through. My goal over time is to build a nice collection of U.S. regular issues and commemoratives by selling off/trading everything else - I'm in pretty good shape from the 20's to about 2012.

Now the actual problem - thanks for making it here!

Since my Dad and I both had Minkus "All American" albums I thought I could just start combining the two albums. Unfortunately my Dad did not buy any supplements after 1998 so I have a 17 year hole to fill.

Now the question(s) - thanks again!

What would be the most cost effective way for me to catch up? I don't mind changing album brands so is there some sort of current album I could buy and then just toss the older pages? Buying an album and year or 2 of supplements at one time wouldn't be so bad - but 17 years worth (even if I can find them) seems painful!

Thanks for any advice!
George

I bet you could find a used album on ebay that fits your needs.

My personal preference is the Scott National album. It is nice because they make a lot of different specialty pages. So I am able to use their pages for small sheets and booklet panes as well.

The best bang for the buck for singles is the Mystic Album. Buying a new album set for $40 directly is the best deal. Sellers on ebay for more plus a lot more in shipping. Supplements are inexpensive.

I too like the Mystic album. I use reinforcement rings on the pages as the holes in the pages are a bit fragile. Overall very satisfied

George,

Welcome!

I was faced with a similar issue when my father passed away. What you do depends a lot on your budget and your tastes. The link Geoff posted is a good review.

Like others on this thread, I use Mystic albums. They aren't perfect (e.g. the way they show se-tenants) but they meet my needs just fine.

I treated dad's "stuff" as kiloware for my collection. It was fun going through it. Who knows what surprises he left for you!

Experienced stamps need a home too. I'd rather have an example that is imperfect than no example.
I collect for enjoyment, not investment.

geosafe,

Welcome to our Forum.

I had a similar dilemma about albums several years ago. In the end, I migrated to the MYSTIC Heirloom from my beloved All-American albums. I keep the All Americans on the shelf as a reminder of my younger days. Begrudgingly, I do have to say that the page layouts on the MYSTIC are better than the All American. Plus the MYSTIC three "D" ring binders allow the pages to lie flat. Also, the Scott numbering is helpful.

You can invest by purchasing the $40- set and then update to the Premuim binders later on. The pages are the same.

Though sophisticated U.S. albums are available from Lighthouse Publications (a German company), DAVO (In the Netherlands), and others, the highest quality affordable U.S. album is published by Scott and available from a number of sellers including Amos Advantage (which is the Scott Publishing Co. now owned by Amos Press).

It's called the Scott National Album. It's a few hundred dollars with binders and pages. You have a choice of 3-ring or 2-post binders. The 2-post binders are more classic. The 3-ring allows pages to lie flat and pages to be added or removed, but there is more wear on the holes as you turn the pages over the rings. Also, the 3-ring binders are much larger in depth to fit the rings, so they tend to hang off normal bookshelves unlike the more classic 2-post binders. Pages are the same for both types of binders.

Used binders can be found on ebay as can used albums. This might be a way to get started very inexpensively. Quality varies on used items, of course.

As to Minkus if you want to go that route, I"m not sure if U.S. pages are still published but they may be. I think Amos Advantage (which has also taken over the Minkus line of albums after Minkus went out of business and tries to keep them in publication) might sell pages and supplements but the supplements one by one will be very expensive. Binder choices are very limited -- essentially one, a fairly clunky 2-post binder (in my opinion). Check their website. Keep in mind that Minkus albums are not as well supported as Scott and others.

An alternative is to use the Stamp Album Pages website which can print pages (their own design) in both the Minkus and the Scott album sizes (as well as 8.5 x 11 three-ring binder size). It would be possible to purchase from them all the pages you are missing and do so fairly inexpensively, though the paper will not match the Minkus paper in thickness or shade of white. Or just purchase an entire album of pages from them from beginning to end, and all the pages will match. Page layouts are very basic, just boxes with no pictures, but are very well done. Search online for this website. They are called the Steiner pages after their designer.

Mystic Stamp Co. publishes its own 3-ring binder albums for U.S. stamps. To me, they're a little elementary and lack elegance compared especially to the Scott pages which are larger and more sophisticated. Scott pages are a cream color while many other pages are brighter white which makes a difference to some. I think the Mystic pages are bright white. You may find the Mystic pages just fine for your taste, however. These only fit a 3-ring binder so no option for more traditional 2-post pages.

You can order samples or entire albums and compare them. Returns are usually accepted within a few weeks of the ones you don't like as much.

From what I've read, the MYSTIC Hingeless pages are white. My regular MTSTIC (non-hingeless) pages are cream colored.

Thanks to all for the responses. It's really heartening to know there is such a great resource available!

I'm going to peruse ebay a bit but in all likelihood I'll go with one of the Mystic fferings as they seem to have the most bang for the buck.

Thanks again!

You absolutely can't beat the Mystic album for the price. But it does have some weird treatment of se-tenants. Some blocks of 4 are strips of 4 and some are broken up into individual stamps.

But for probably 80% of your collection through 2000, it will suit your needs at a very good price point. Mystic also sells just the pages, if you want to use your own binders.

The Mystic Heirloom album with regular binders is $39.95: https://www.mysticstamp.com/Product...s/DS111/USA/

The Mystic Heirloom with premium binders is $74.95: https://www.mysticstamp.com/Product...s/DS117/USA/

The Mystic Heirloom pages by themselves are $28.00: https://www.mysticstamp.com/Product...s/GS705/USA/

I have taken it upon myself to "hack" some of the Mystic pages, in order to fix of the se-tenant layout issues. Volume I is done, and someday I'll finish the rest of Volume II. Whether you choose to use these pages is up to you. But it will let you see these pages up close and personal, so you can get a feel for what Mystic pages look like. I have been collecting for almost 60 years.
My vote is for the Steiner Album pages.

US stamps in classic area cost a fortune, so the price of the album is very small compare to the US stamps that go in it .

When you plan to put stamps at $ 500, $ 1000, $ 5000 and over 10k , I strongly suggest to invest in something strong and solid and something that protect well the investment

So Lighthouse and for the plate block you simply add the Lighthouse LB page betwen regulars one, they come with pockets of every size similar to the SAFE albums pages.

Of course it's not cheap , but collecting US classic stamps is very expensive , so I'm thinking strongly that if someone can't afford a Lighthouse, he can't simply not afford many of the US classics stamps.

I know many will dissagree, but that's my view of it.

If you have a $ 2000 stamps collection, any albums will do. if you have a $ 100,000 collection, well you don't store it on Staples papers in 3 rings binders.

Is a $1000 stamp on acid free paper in a Showgard mount in a mystic album and slip case less protected than a Scott product solution with both in a climate controlled room?
