Hi Rod,
From Maury's section on postmarks, under "Cachets annexes":
Le cachet "chiffre dans un circle" a été utilisé par les bureaux de Paris pour les recommandés et les lettres chargées, mais aussi pour les obliterations du jour de l'an.
Le cachet "chiffre romain dans un circle" semble avoir été utilisé pour les correpondances ver l'étranger.
which I read as:
The stamp "number in a circle" was used by the Paris offices for registered letters and insured letters, but also for New Year cancellations.
The stamp "Roman numeral in a circle" seems to have been used for foreign correspondence.
I'm not sure about the best translation for "lettre chargé" but I think it refers to a letter with declared value so my best guess in this context is "insured".
The illustrations show neat round postmarks but maybe this one has just become distorted by the way it was applied? |

Wow. Thanks Nigel, wonderful. Thanks very much for your time. I am thinking perhaps a rubber hand held hammer, yet the size of the impression would suggest not.

The things that catch you out. I was sorting a huge bunch of France, and this lady was face down, and I saw what I thought was a watermark. France does not use watermarks! So I go Googling before even turning the stamp over. Ink bleed from a Slogan Postmark ! Sheesh. Whilst on the subject of Watermarks Quote: I could tell you the 5c Ceres of France has a "LACROIX" watermark on some stamps and is very hard to find Author : gusgug Has anyone an image of that Watermark? PS: What I thought was a Wmk Coconut palm is possibly a Poinsettia Slogan (Christmas) Sc# 942 "Ship of State" |

Hi Rod,
Info from Maury:
The watermark reads
LACROIX FRÈRES
in outline letters with serifs.
The watermark is split over 8 or 12 stamps at the edge of the sheet.
It was only used in the last printing of the 5c towards the end of March 1876.
The price for a used single stamp in the 2018 catalogue is 150 euros.
There's an illustration in my 2009 Maury which is where I got the other info.

Wow! Thank you so much, boys and girls. We are blessed to have such knowledgeable philatelists here. Even the meter I was thinking of, was not a Poinsettia..... |

Thematic : First mention of Tennis on a postage stamp (for me) that beats the rest by some 30 years. Cannot find the slogan anywhere else. Cannes: Polo Golf Tennis Sc#125 1900 Type "Merson" Tennis: Origin "Jeu de paume" invented in the 13th Century by French Monks. Erasmus writes a poem in 1527..."Racket Ball game" and mentions for the first time written "Tennez" (Tennis?) Acknowledgement : Exponet TENNIS - A VERY OLD MODERN SPORT EXHIBITOR: GUNNAR DAHLVIG, LAHOLM, SWEDEN |

Hi Rod, It's great when a stamp lines up so nicely with its postmark! Here's a cover showing a full postmark: Seen on a listing from Auktionshaus Christian Wapler. A third line adds two more sports: YACHTING and HIPPISME (horse racing). |

Hi Nigel, Extraordinaire ! Wow...thanks a bunch. Great to have that image. So a roller cancellation, not a meter slogan! (or maybe a continuous machine cancel) Quote: and HIPPISME (horse racing). Never connected the two before....HIPPODROME. Issued under Occupation Alsace and Lorraine) 1916 Steiner Page 51. Note : William Steiner has incorrectly placed two spots as 20c on 20pf, (Blue and Ultra) should read 25c on 20pf. |

Hi Rod. German Occupation stamps for Alsace-Lorraine exist (1870/71 and 1939/45) But in 1916 Alsace-Lorraine used german stamps (without overprint) since it was part of German Reich from 1871 to 1919. The stamps you show were used in the part of North of France which was occupied by German Army (and in Belgium too) In Michel catalogue they're listed under "Etappengebiet West" http://www.germanstamps.net/imp_occ_west/ |
