I have been trying to find out what stamp this is. Could it be a cut square from postal stationary, as the imperf stamps listed in the various catalogues I have searched in do not list a stamp like this one.
France has these Peace and Commerce stamps in imperf condition, but the colours correspond with the 1 Franc and if this is such a stamp, it should say "1 F" in the square, not just "1".
I tried to find this stamp in the French Colonies section, but no luck there either...

I checked in my Stanley Gibbons catalogue under France and it says to look under French Colonies for the imperfs. In the French Colonies section I couldn't see one that matches the colour. Is the colour correct in the pic?

Yes, black (or at least very dark) on yellow paper.

hi Rick, I have been told that this is probably a cut square, because of the wide margins and there is one being listed that has all the characteristics. Rather common, but that's no problem. Happy to know what it is.

Oh, and it is definitive yellow / buff / straw or whatever you may want to call it. No hint of blue apparent.

Yes, this is almost certainly a cut square. If you want to identify it further, you could consult Storch, Francon & Sinais, "Les Entiers Posteaux de France ed de Monaco" (7th ed. 2005), the definitive catalog of French postal stationery. According to the catalog classification, this indicium would be type SAG A, and within that you could nattow it down both by color and by paper type (thicker paper is likely from a postcard (CP), thinner paper is likely from a newspaper wrapper (BDJ), which are the two categories of stationery that used SAG A indicia.
