I see these misidentified all the time on ebay, so I'll leave the Steiner Page
and treat individually.
These are expensive stamps, so all I have are "Space Fillers"
I make no apology for that.

This is the first occurrence of anything that looks like a genuine Postmark on an official stamp.
All others (part ring) assume fake cancels, or Cancelled to Order.

The 1 piastre and 2 piastres values issued between 1901 and 1913 did not fill the requirements of the post offices at such places, and other values were provided by overprinting, or hand-stamping, ordinary postage stamps of the required values with the letter T, to convert them into postage due stamps. Each office using these provisional stamps appears to have had its own type of overprint


ID: Going by the device above the "T" with the thick Right Arm,
I would suggest these Provisional strikes originated at GALATA.

Rod - nice pages I think Turkey is a really interesting area to collect. Particularly the classics and the chances to find postmarks from dozen different nations that was previously part of the Ottoman empire.

Your Taxe provisionals are great - the readable Istanbul postmark combined with the 'T'

It looks like my GALATA suggestion is incorrect, I'll spend some time
perusing the material tomorrow.

I am a newbie with Turkey, closing in on a complete BASIC collection,
missing about 100 stamps up to 1983 (excluding Anatolia -Turkey in Asia)

Now I need to get a decent catalogue to isolate the varieties, just not sure if I want to go there.
I would have no skill at all with Postmarks, so that exciting area would be lost to me.
But the "Republic" issues could be experience all of it's own, with shades and paper thickness, and perf varieties.

I've really enjoyed the journey thus far, wasn't that expensive, most stamps
were available on a meagre wallet.
I have learnt there a lot of Turkey collectors out there, it seems very popular.

Wow - that sounds like a terrific start for a newbie - congratulations



Personally I decided to save my energy! I found it more intriguing - and less complicated - to try to find stamps with postmarks from e.g Yemen, Albania etc. I am only at a very simplified level which take no special skill at all. I am only looking for any postmark in Latin letters - without even considering any attempt on the Arabic script postmarks . Any Latin text string (full word or only partial) is easily searched for in an excel postmark database - and voila, normally you will find a match. So far I've identified approx 100 forerunners - not much - and I have no clue if they have any value at all - but I still find it awarding to be able to display those forerunnners as part of e.g. my Albania collection. But that's just me I guess
