Hi Rod,
Your two overprinted Turkish postage dues were overprinted for use by the Syrian Arab Kingdom in 1920:
SG KD16 - 2 mils on 5 paras
SG KD17 - 20 paras
The central overprint on both stamps says "Arab Government".
The overprint at the bottom right on the 5 paras stamp is the 2 mils surcharge.

Hi Nigel, picture me hitting my forehead, with the palm of my hand.....Syria ! of course. I knew I had seen that curious overprint before, but I had absolutely no idea where.
Thanks for putting me out of my misery.
Update: Stanley Gibbons Simplified 2005, only lists KD96 I'll dig out my 1950 SG catalogues.

I have another stamp with the Syrian Opt, but it is playing hide and seek, with me. Whilst trolling through my junk, I found this which may assist students of Turkey. Authors as shown, or unknown. T=taxe "T" overprint |

Blaamand.
To Save and search your Ottoman Postmarks.
1. Open the link 2. Select print 3. Select "change" 4. Select "print as a *.PDF file" 5. Print 6. Save
Once saved, go to the folder where it was saved and open the file
CONTROL F
A little box opens top right hand corner
Type in your part Postmark, hit enter Each time you hit enter it will move to other options for the Postmark ID
It beats an Excel file , hands down.
Hope this helps.

Query : Seek assistance. 1945 Steiner Page 7. Census Minisheet Sc#933 CV : $75 / $100 I thought I had made a good buy, I bought a page of Turkey with this one hiding amongst, for $6. I can see it has been "mutilated" (cut) I am wondering if Steiner Page is correct? Anyone know the size of the Mini-sheet please? |

Hi Rod,
You are again showing some very interesting stamps!
The four black stamps with the PTT overprint are SG 906-908 with two copies of SG 907.
The basic (unoverprinted) stamps were the postage dues SG D146, D148 & D149 but these were just used for ordinary postage once overprinted in 1917.
All these hundreds of overprints were the result of the outbreak of war with the UK when Turkey could no longer get stamps from Bradbury Wilkinson so they overprinted old issues that were still in storage.
Some new issues were obtained from Vienna in 1916 but the problem seems to have continued. These 1917 PTT overprints were applied to a huge range of stamps dating back to the 1865 issue. |
