Brunei, the small country on the island of Borneo, issued a stamp of support for the struggle of the Palestinian people in 1989. The Dove escapes a cage.

The UNESCO International Literacy Day won't be until the 8th of September, but I have often thought about the people of Afghanistan lately, especially the children.

(Hi Rod, You are right, it's time to get Peace Doves energised again! K.)

Cyprus celebrated 25 years of Peace and Development with a Peace Dove and an ear of grain. That period came to a tragic end in 1974; maybe the island will some day be unified again. Cyprus became a member state of the UN in 1960; today it still has UN Peacekeepers on duty there. See "Refugees" and "Barbed Wire" threads for stamps on that subject.

(Hi Rod, Your Transjordan stamps must be the first issued by that country after independence from the Brits in 1946. How long did it keep that name? K.)

Hi Kris,
I am vastly ignorant of the politics of this area.
I can only rely on wiki.

Emirate of Transjordan, British-controlled territory 1921–46
The modern Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan, initially known 1946–49 as the Hashemite Kingdom of Transjordan.

Chad became independent from France in 1960, but French influence is still strong. The stamp of late 1959 illustrates the separation between Paris and Fort Lamy, the name of the capital till 1973.

(Hi Rod, indeed analysis of the stamps of Jordan needs a specialist. So do those of Chad. K.)

The Peace Dove is standing guard in front of the UN building; the children are looking hopeful; there is a helping hand. Today is Children's Day in Germany.
