I read the recent Linns story about how first day covers are all going to be canceled at the Cancellation Services unit of the USPS in Kansas City, Mo. (see below). So modern first day covers are no longer actually canceled on the day of the postmark, nor are they actually canceled, possibly never actually being in the city on the postmark. It seems to me that they no longer have any trace to what they were designed to to be.

It's not really a change from what's been going on for decades.

The change is now none of the covers go to the city of issue.

Virtually all of them were being handled in Kansas City already. They were being sent to the city of issue, and then sent to KC for processing.
Registered cachetmakers/dealers have been going directly to KC for years.

It's probably been 50 years since there was an actually meaningful connection between most first-day postmarks and the actual issue of the stamp. The way around it is to collect unofficials or to be at the ceremony.
