Just had a chance to review the first round of the Inman sale results from Siegel Auctions held last week. Strong prices for high quality items. Was impressed by the hammer prices on some of the rare part perfs. R51b at $15,500 and R60b at $6250, and I always wonder at R66b and R69b, they are a mind field. Any thoughts SCF?
Scott Trepel thought the prices should have been 20% higher (since he knew what the sellers had originally paid for the items). However all the revenue people I spoke with (both collectors and dealers) thought the prices very strong. There are some who question that R51b because of the cancel date despite the old cert (the date is about 2 years late, used by the NY Central R.R., a long term daily major user of revenues).
I thought the prices were very strong, straying into insane for some of the items. Then again, I cannot afford to play in that pool, so I hadn't even planned to bid; got a few esoteric items in the Aldrich auction instead. I guess if money is no object, you'll pay what it takes for high quality.
The cancel on that R51b would always have me second guessing, especially since oversized misperfs are not exactly unknown. Too risky, IMO.
Prices went a lot higher than I thought they would. Although with the quality of material, I shouldn't have been surprised. I even bid on a couple of lots, but they quickly went out of my ballpark. I wonder if this will raise the catalog value of many of the imperfs and part perfs in the next catalog?
