I have two stamps which appear to be Britain @237 but appear more orange than red-brown. They are so dull, it is impossible to pick out the numbers or words unless they are scanned. They are mint. Is it possible that both have simply faded? I have scanned them with two others just for contrast.

I'd hazard a guess that the right-hand stamp is the red-brown and the left the pale red-brown from the wartime printings. But both appear to have been exposed to light and faded as a result.
