Scott lists the Swaziland 1938 Geo VI definitive series as being issued on April 1, 1938.

Do I read the cancel on the stamp below as 1 IV E 38, correctly as 1 April, 1938, and, if so, may I consider the stamp as a first-day bullseye cancel from Mbabane?

Does the cancel appear genuine?

To what does the E in the date line refer?

Thanks.

Don

Opinion:
Nice Stamp !
yes, first day cancel SON
"E" usually refers to Evening, but it is an unusual position in the CDS.
Not seen before by me.

Mbabane without the Alpha inclusion

and with "A"

That's what gave me pause too and prompted the question about its genuineness.

Thanks, Rod222

Don,
I have 2 examples in my own collection of Mbabane with Alpha incl CDS
They have differing double rings, with "A" and "B" Alpha inclusions.

I would be confident your Pmk is genuine.

Look forward to seeing if specialists can explain.

Rod222:

I notice that the link you provided also shows a 1932 Mbabane cancel with an A in the date line between month and year as your image does. If E refers to an evening cance, might not the A refer to "afternoon?"

Yes it did, Don, on British Stamps, as I recall, as well as early India.
The memory is a little foggy on the details.
I'll rummage through my database.

Still browsing.
India had "Eve" for evening

Nope, sorry Don,
my database has let me down,
I am pretty sure, the webmaster of the British Postmarks, gave me a set of CDS codes, that indicated Time of day.
I cannot locate the post, sorry.

(On a tangent) I have this Time of day code on early Brit Stamps eg : FG = 6:35pm

Don,
if your really need to find Alpha "time of day" on Brit Stamps, A= etc etc
email the webmaster here, he is a fine fellow.

..and if you do, post his response here on SCF.
