Hi Folks.
I just started working on a 1943 edition Big Blue which already had about 7000 stamps. The binder is in reasonably good shape and the pages are clean as well. I know that a lot of you have suggested here to remove the stamps and place them on the newer edition Scott albums which is not an option for me expense wise ( I got the New Amos reprints of Minkus Supreme globals not too long ago and they cost me a pretty penny). I am also too lazy to start filling both the Minkus as well as a new Scott International from scratch and would rather spend on getting new stamps. This week's project is to break down the BBs into 2 albums, place glassine interleaves and reinforce the pages with Avery reinforcement labels. Since I have the album broken down already what else should I do to better preserve them?
Should I place the reinforcement labels on both sides of a page? Should I reinforce every page (even if they look fine)? Any particular stress points on the albums/pages that I should reinforce? A lot of mundane questions but I would like to set up the album right the first time.
How about handling the albums themselves to get the most milege out from your Scott Albums?

That should work - I'm not sure you need to do more.

I find the beginning pages seem to undergo more stress, so reinforcing them with Avery is good prevention on one side or even two sides. The middle pages and the end pages seem to experience less stress, and you may not need to reinforce all the pages (my opinion).

Thanks Bob.
Didn't know that the beginning needed more reinforcing. Just checked the album carefully..it does look like some of the holes in the front pages need a bit of help.

ARAGORN----Don't use reinforcing on both sides that is overkill and will thicken up you binders and cause more stress on the pages . There needs to be some give and take so the paper moves as you flip the pages ,too tight is a danger not only to the pages but also the binder . Believe it or not but the binder metal post do curve over time due to the stress of the pages .
Get in the habit of washing your hands with soap and water before handling your albums because over time the oil's start to stain the corners of the pages .
I explained before that I use a system that I found works best for me ,I purchase a cheap set of INTERNATIONALS of 8 to 15 volumes at stamp auctions and add all my new stamps to that set . This reduces the stress and handling on my main collection . This is important if it is just a few stamps to be mounted .After a year or two then I match and remove those stamps to my main collection. The International set after that is sent to a major stamp auction firm for sale . This gives me the highest return on selling my duplicates .

Thanks for the heads up about the avery labels. I will stop putting them on both sides. I think I have done a couple of dozen pages that way already.
Very intriguing solution indeed. Doesn't that involve a lot of hinging, unhinging and rehinging and complications thereof like thins etc? Also the albums will have unsightly gaps /hinge remnants etc?
I would love to see pictures of your collection.
You must have a truly astounding primary collection if your duplicates are sold a major auction houses

I wrote something about this a few years ago on my blog that might be relevant. Rather than try to paraphrase, here is the link:

If I pull a stamp out an album to put in a new one, the stamp gets soaked, dried and flattened. I rarely pull hinges off the stamps. Really the only time I'll even attempt to pull a hinge off, oddly enough, is on unused stamps that still have their gum and it's the early green hinge on it. Those usually just pop right off will very little effort. And if that stamp still has part of an older hinge under it, into the tub it goes if it's just a cheap worldwide stamp. I don't care if those have the original gum or not.

that was very helpful. Answered all my questions. Thanks much.
Mike I usually slice the hinge off with a sharp knife and rehinge with a new hinge on top
