Hi Guys..Looking through my NFLD stamps, I came across a Scott 193 "Salmon" stamp that was very different than all the others...The differences are not recognized in "Scott", or "Unitrade", or even in my "N.S.S.C." ( Newfoundland Specialized Stamp Catalogue).

Below is a comparison with a normal stamp on the left and the odd stamp on the right...The first thing (of many) is the colour difference.

I will introduce clues as to WHY it is different..Then I will as planned send it off to BNAPS and N.S.S.C. to ask their professional opinion.

Using my colour identifier software, you can see a definite colour difference as shown below...It has more of a bluish tinge to it.

Here are 2 stamps lined up at the top of the stamps..The odd stamp is on the bottom.

Here is a measurement with a pixel ruler showing the height difference between a normal stamp and the odd stamp...Measuring the height of the left numeral box "0".

The normal stamp on the left has a frame measurement from top of outer frame to bottom of outer frame of 20.9 mm, but the odd stamp on the right has a measurement from top of frame to bottom of frame that measures 21.5 mm..A significant difference.

Here are 3 stamps with top frame lines lined up..Far left is the odd stamp and the other 2 are normal.

Here is one more difference between these stamps...The odd stamp is on the left with the other 2 stamps to the right...Notice the circled area, the odd stamp has lines in its framework, while the others stamps are solid as shown in the picture below.

Another difference s the thickness of the inner numeral frame lines, as shown below...The odd stamp is on the left and the normal on the right..Quite a difference in the thickness.

One last difference is the thickness of the paper..The odd stamp on the left is thinner and the impression is more visible through the stamp.

CONCLUSION..There are 3 scenarios to why it is different and NOT recognized as of yet.

1 - They ran the amount of stamps they needed and the plate got warn out and replaced it with a new plate to finish the run, which may explain the frame size difference and details.

2 - They did not have enough sheets printed and they were told to include the proof sheets that ended up with proofs with perforations.

3 - Counterfeit stamp

Robert, the paper looks very different also! The left stamp has thinner, whiter paper.

You may have two different stamps here. 193 is Perkins Bacon Printing which are 20.4mm as opposed to the Waterlow Printing #260 which measures 21.0mm. There are a number of look alike stamps in Newfoundland issues and Unitrade gives cross references for all of them.

Is there any significant difference in the perforation rate?

Ya John

PERFORATION

Normal stamp - 13.5 X 13.5
Odd stamp - 12.85 X 12.85

Mike I may have 2 stamps by mistake..Scott 260 shows perf 12.5 X 12.5
Sounds like mistake on my part..Thanks guys, will delete post soon.
