This is a stamp of the Danube Steam Shipping Company (Austria/Hungary)- they had their own stamps for delivering mail pieces.

I hope maybe some others here know more about it. I just found this one in an online catalog:

So without the hole - which is definitely no perfin - or maybe even with it, this stamp could be pretty interesting for specialists.

This does not help much! I Googled the contents of the stamp, and found it listed by Klaseboer. But, he says on his website that he does not know what they were used for.
By the way, if you'd Google the stamp you find not only this one but several others in different colors.
Google the text of the stamp, and then go to "images".

They're DDSG Insurance Stamps. The reference work for these would be E.F. Hurt and Denwood N. Kelly's Danube Steam Navigation Company, American Philatelic Society Handbook Series, 1950 (64 pages). Available on Amazon.

Postmaster,
There is a fabulous *.pdf online, from David Feldman Auctions, that cover these, and on cover. Great Stuff.

I have it as ddsg danube steam navigation.pdf which may not be correct.

If you wish a copy, holler.
