SYDNEY SPECIAL Postmark

Seeking the fee for this service, anyone?

For payment of the Special Delivery fee. A telegraph messenger would deliver the item from the delivery PO to the delivery address thus ensuring fast delivery. A Special posting box was located in the GPO's of major cities for that purpose.

Ephemera

Glassine Orlo-Smith (Circa 1939)

Mr. Orlo-Smith was the gentleman, that with a stock of 200,000 King George V Penny reds, managed to build us our "shades" reference.

When I first posted this scan (about 10 years ago) a colleague (to my chagrin, I have lost his name) built us a colour swatch to match Orlo-Smith's work
This image now is around the internet.

Australian Stamp Hinges

Here is a hinge packet from England. 60 years on and still holding those SG219 "Lt John Shortland R.N." stamps. (Though I'm not sure I should be proud of that statement.) For the first time, I read the back of the packet and was surprised to see that You are not supposed to detach a hinge before it is completely dry.

If I remember correctly, Orlo-Smith was very much involved with the early days of the Australian Commonwealth Specialists' Catalgue, but can't remember in what capacity.

Yes, fell for that one (once) I think every hinger has accidentally mounted one upside down, pull it off the page, and there it is, a massive "thin". Ugh.

If one is hinging correctly, with just a dab of moisture, you can almost get away with it, but not recommended.
