Coil stamp? The 5d version of the Black-backed magpie shown was never issued as a postage stamp. An explanation of what it actually was, can be seen here:

First time I had seen it mentioned was in a Prestige Auction Sale of Australian Coil Stamps.
It must have been subsidiary information, I took it as an unissued coil.

I am wondering if the non philatelic journalist, has made an error?
Any members aware this stamp has a variety, attracting a price of $15,000 ?

Stanley Gibbons Pt. 1 lists variety SG407a. Value omitted.
"No. 407a was caused by a shift of the yellow-olive which covered the white face value."
Listed at £2000 in year 2000 ed.

I think Wmk 2 (Crown CA paper)

The 11 bar "F" Pmk (Fremantle) would tend to confirm this, introduced 1886
(12 letters known, G = Geraldton, AR=Arthur River etc & etc)
