Rod, The first one is a bit baffling. It appears to be a triple strike of a postmark with three wavy lines (the 9 lines are in 3 groups of 3), but there's no indication that they're part of a larger cancel with location, date, etc. The second is from the post office in Canberra's New Parliament House, see here. |

We shall make you honorary "worldwide collector" Thank you very much. Not come across that link before, quite a comprehensive work by the webmaster. Saved. Also, encouraged me to add a Folder to my Database...ACT Canberra. It is not very often we see specialised information on that sleepy Territory. |

Eiger, 1992 ...the original "Threatened Species" Sc# 1241-1246 Die cut self adhesive Perf 11½
The others you had were "Wildlife" but Scott includes them under "Threatened species Type"
keep on the backing paper.
These also appear in Litho. and Typo.
Litho is sharper in appearance esp. the black printing

Rod - that ship letter / experimental air mail cover is fabulous! Probably arrived from a ship, then conveyed by air - and displaying a lovely mixed franking. Might be philatelic in nature, but adoring nevertheless.
I've just prepared my own pages for Australia until -53. Now, before I actually start working on and mounting my Aussie stamps, I need to read this entire thread of yours all over again so I'm updated with all your knowledge about them. Thank you for keeping the thread alive, very interesting. |

Jon, Quote: Probably arrived from a ship, then conveyed by air - and displaying a lovely mixed franking. Caveat: Newbie Air knowledge. What I think occurs here, the letter was sent from Perth, to Melbourne, then forwarded on to Brisbane for the flight to London. "Ship Mail Room" was an encompassing department, that forwarded mail on to overseas destinations, a carry over from the "Packet trade" The "Ship Mail Room" would have forwarded the mail to the aircraft in Brisbane, ready for the legendary flight. Happy to stand corrected.......... Agree, Philatelic in nature, but some certainly had personal mail enclosed, passing on the excitement of this new "wonder service" Not all examples would be centred for the Philatelic trade, rather, personal mementos of the state of the art service. Unsure if the 2/2d (2 shillings and tuppence) was the going postage rate? Jon, I have squillions of Australian duplicates, let us know what you are missing (decimal or sterling currencies after say 1930) |

Guess: Australian overseas contracts for printing stamps. I know Australia printed some stamps for Ireland, (sa) self adhesive. It appears the same for Portugal. "Expo 98" Sprintppak SNP |

Here's another envelope (not mine, purloined from http://www.sasoceania.org/countries...-australia/) that was 1/11d but started from Darwin so there was no domestic connection. This article also has some further interesting snippets of information. |

Great work Frank, thank you. Yes I think Thruppence was the going rate Perth to Adelaide. |

Rod, Ok, thanks for clarifying, I was thinking 'Ship mail room' was to take care of mail from ships, buy obviously not so . Thank you for the generous offer on dups. It would probably be a long list if I should tell you all what I'm missing . Once I'm through with the transfer from stockbooks I can assess the status and send you some images for the most empty pages to give you an idea, but don't know when it will be. |

Jon, what you assumed is understandable. No need to knock heads...just part of learning.
From another source, Author "Brownie"
His "latest date" of 1925 is proven incorrect with my cover of 1931
quote: The Ship Room cds were applied at the Perth GPO. As the name implies, the cds were applied to mails that were to be carried via ship, predominantly to the UK, but also to the Eastern colonies of Australia. The Ship mail was part of the general Mail Room function until the major re-organisation in 1896 mentioned above.
In 1896/97, 3 extra rooms were added to the rear of the GPO, and these rooms dealt with all mails that were bound for destinations outside the colony. The Ship Room cancellers were used on all these mails. With the opening of the Trans Australia Railway (1917), the Eastern States mails were soon no longer 'shipped' but 'trained'. The wording on the Ship Room cancellers became redundant, and was gradually replaced by other cds. (Latest 1925)

Error Correction. (Previous recent posts) A colleague took great delight in exposing my error. A case of "Not seeing the forest for the trees" But we shall excuse him, he is just a Kangaroo collector. (Afraid to go into the deep end, of Worldwide collecting ) 1971 Emergency Air labels...Postal Strike. (In Australian Currency and British New Pence) Pages (now 3) will slot in at 1971 Pages 11A, 11B, and 11c. |
