Hi guys..Take a look at this Scott 47 and tell me if it is a failed retouch or just a quick fix (even though it is not that good)..?

Is the blow up taken from the same stamp? I am confused as to the orientation here.

Yes jkelley01938...It is the same stamp..Top stamp is scanned and the bottom picture I took with my USB microscope..Thats why the colour difference.

Possibly missing ink in that area? How does the thickness of the bottom border compare just to the right of the area you have magnified? You also may want to compare with others (if you have them) to see if this is normal for this stamp. (I don't have one to help out here.)

Hi Robert,

That is a flaw probably caused by a scratch or weak area on the impression of the transfer roll or possibly the original die. It is commonly seen on many copies of this stamp that are not over-inked. Check out copies of #47 on ebay and you will see that most of them show this flaw if the image is high resolution.

Below is a sample from a proof that shows the flaw very clearly.
