I have pored through my RHM catalog and been unsuccessful in identifying this Brazilian regular issue stamp. A hand-drawn rendering of the watermark appears below.

Any insight would be greatly appreciated.

Johnconn,

Scott offers three options for this base stamp based on watermark:

1. 1929 #300 - "watermark 101" contains stars and Casa da moeda - this does not look like yours
2. 1936 # 405 - "watermark 236" contains coat of arms - again not like yous.
3. 1938 #459 - "watermark 249" contains the word "brasil" and Correio multilple times in rows and this one looks like it matches to your drawing.

Hope this helps.
Hobsun

Updated description of the watermarks/typo on date/scott #.

Thank you so much for your detective work. I typically do not consult Scott, as RHM lists many more varieties. Interestingly, the #249 watermark in Scott looks to be the equivalent of type N in RHM, with one difference: RHM shows the mirror image of the text, which is how the watermark usually appears.

My guess is that this copy simply has the reverse image of the standard mirrored watermark.

Watermark 249- "CORREIO BRASIL", multiple, letters 7 mm high

"ORREIO", 7mm height
The letters are aligned vertically, and the "BRASIL" and "CORREIO" script is fairly easy to discern. Check the 7 mm height.

Note the small circle dot between "BRASIL" and "C"?
There is also a small circle dot between "Brasil" and "Correio". Look for it as it is diagnostic.

From my blog post "Who's afraid of watermarking the Brazil 1918-41 series?".

Johnconn,

I also noticed it appeared to be a reverse image from your drawing but it was the best option I could see. I have not used RHM but luckily the image was easy to find in Scott and the listing pointed to the the various options. My next search would have been on stampworld.com (searching for all Brasil stamps with 5000). I did that search post finding it in Scott and it gave the same results. Stampworld.com comes in handy, if you have not used it you should check it out.

Thanks Jkjblue. Yes, the watermark is 7mm high, just not mirrored as in your images.
