Hi guys..Thought I would post this before I send it off to Unitrade/N.S.S.C./Bnaps for verification of my findings.
Look at these 2 N.S.S.C. (Newfoundland Specialized Stamp Catalogue). Unitrade does not print any NFLD custom duty stamps in their catalouge, that is why I used the N.S.S.C. cataloguing number.

These are rouletted 7 stamps...1925 Prince Edward of Whales Issue...These are engraved and no watermark.

The normal stamp is on the left, and the odd stamp on the right..At first glance they appear to be identical...But on a closer look the right one looks as though a printer/proof reader has altered the stamp for some reason..Maybe the stamp identified was not etched enough on the plate and was altered before printing to fill in the areas affected.

Robert

Upon closer investigation, you will see the difference between the 2 stamps...The normal stamp is always on top or to the left...Let me know what YOU think could have caused the differences..

Very interesting wert, as always.....this is a printing issue but what method was used during that time ?
I do not own the Newfoundland Cat but seriously think of ordering it as I have many stamps in my Canadian collection.
Thanks !
Rene

P.S. Will be consulting "The Postage Stamps and Postal History of Canada", Winthrob S. Boggs...Copyright 1945 and 1974..Second Printing 1975. There is a chapter on printing methods and flaws. Bokk bought by my father 44 years ago.

Wert,

Nice though it appears you've got something, I don't collect this or have a view.

Renden : I am not connected to NSSC, but its a must buy and worth every penny--its unfair advantage for you when buying items from someone on the other side who only has Unitrade. Get the PDF version, so it travels with you too (iPhone, dropbox, computer, whatever).

I also like Boggs History, both a great read and resource which I use regularly. Keep in mind that there are errors because in 1945 many facts were not known to collectors at the time. So take as solid source but with grain of salt. my opinion.

After staring at it for a bit, its an interesting observation. Not knowing how these stamps were printed, its hard to be sure. The odd stamp could be under-inked relative to the normal. Your observation on etching certainly has a shot of being spot on, as it could resemble this if the plate was reworked as such. I'll be interested to hear how this one turns out.

I enjoy your threads, as I like plate and printing varieties in general. Staring at these stamps that you post, is a good exercise for honing skills at differentiating these in general.

I believe that what you have is a slight to medium over-inked version as compared to a normal or slightly under-inked version. This is most notable in the "1"s. There are clearly lines visible on your right sample. However, looking at the left sample, I also see the same lines underneath all of that extra ink.
