I have just aquired this starter strip. It has two interesting points.

1) The perforation between the 9th and 10th tabs is missing. Although it looks like it has only 9 tabs the strip is the normal length for 10. I have not seen this before and have no idea if it is common or not.

2) The 3c value printed on the strip was printed across the join. The gap between the two sides of the value is 129 mm giving a diameter of the coil of 41 mm or 1 5/8 inches. I had often wondered about this figure.

Well, if it was rolled up as a coil is, the 3ct mark would cover the end and middle as shown. Probably put there to show the roll was not opened.

I do not know if the missing perf row is common. It would make sense to have a starter as you put it in the perfing machine so it could get a hold on the roll.

This is not the case in any of he other starter strips I have. I think it was just stamped anywhere on the coil.

Is the gauge of the blank coil tab perforations different or similar to that of the coil stamp perforations?

For the same ones that I have, it was found to be perf 8 for the tabs and perf 9.5 for the coils. Thus, there may be some perforation variety.

Whoops I got that wrong and you were right !! I was not careful enough so I went throughh all I have up to Cameo and have listed themm below.

Karsh 2c stamps 9.5 end 7.9
Karsh 3c stamps 9.5 start 7.8

Wilding 2c stamps 9.5 start 7.9 - green blue paper
Wilding 2c stamps 9.5 start 7.8 - green paper
Wilding 2c stamps 9.5 start 7.9 - green paper - precancel
Wilding 2c stamps 9.5 end 7.9 - green paper - precancel
Wilding 5c stamps 9.5 start 8.0 - blue paper
Wilding 5c stamps 9.5 end 7.9 - white paper

Cameo 2c stamps 9.5 start 7.8 - green paper
Cameo 2c stamps 9.5 end 8.0 - white paper
Cameo 3c stamps 9.5 start 7.8 - yellow paper
Cameo 4c stamps 9.5 start 7.8 - red paper
Cameo 5c stamps 9.5 start 7.8 - blue paper

All the end strips I have seen with the exception of that precancel are on white paper and the start strips are on coloured.

There is another Karsh 2c start on ebay at the moment which looks to have the same imperf 9 / 10 tab but it is torn at that position.
