I have had some of these a long time, and wouldn't have spent much on them. Can anyone tell me anything about them? I am only showing one single at the moment (which I just noticed is damaged!). There is a strip of them on ebay at the moment for what looks like a rather high price.

J.C. O'Brien - malt bread - 5 cents

Bill, the one of Billsbargain(?)stamps has a strip of three on sale on ebay and wants the bargain sum of $125.00. So far no one is biting.
There is also a listing for a strip of three on Hipstamp, a bit more reasonable, but it does not show a picture.

Perhaps J.C. O'Brien included a stamp with each loaf of bread, and buyers were supposed to save them for some reason...a free loaf of bread for every 5 stamps saved or something like that? I'm just guessing...

ROD - yours is definitely a TAX stamp. Mine seems to be "promotional". It also doesn't have the quality of even the plainest vintage stamps.

Cheers Nells.
There exists, in my opinion, a plethora of early, odd US material, including locals and civil war stuff, as "reproductions" yours has that look about it.
Still an interesting curiosity, keep B.o.b. and info will arrive some time in the future.

The problem we face, is that the label offers nothing but the name.
It is not a local, a carrier, or anything to do with transfer of mail.

If anything it is a local discount label.
We have no date, no state or address.

I did a run through my database, that covers squillions of US locals
without result.

It may have even be a "fantasie" made recently
The perforations look too "clean cut" for old issues, in my opinion.
If I had a date, I could search my phialtelic records correspondingly.

There is another on Hipstamp for sale at $2

Good Luck.
