I think the middle stamp is France #20 but have no idea what the other two are. Any help is greatly appreciated.

And the high value of the three I might add. The other two are indeed French.

Hi; The third stamp in your selection looks like a clumsy forgery...Pearls too small ,Letters too thin...

Important to know about the stamp from the Netherlands: For it to have the catalogue value mentioned in catalogues, is has to have a margin on all 4 sides of at least 3/4 of a mm. Shorter examples are also collectible but less valuable.

Shown a pair from the same series.

The left stamp is okay(just) the right stamp is to short on the lower right corner.

Johan,
I have noticed that many of the first issues have the 'Franco' cancel. Are other cancel types considered less common?

Hello Don, Yes the franco cancel is the most common, followed by the halfround cancels(halfrondstempel in Dutch, if you want to google). This is not completly round cancel underneath it you can find the word Franco. I would like to show examples, but I have none in my collection at the moment and I do not know if I can show pictures from catalogues due to copyright issues. There are other kinds of cancellations but those are scarce to rare. Kind regards. Johan.

Thank you Johan,
I assume that the half round you describe is like the one shown here on my 10c?

Regarding the France 40c Emperor Napolean III, could it be simply a worn plate rather than a forgery? It seems to have all the correct design elements/features other than the fact that non-inked portions appear thinner/smaller.

Wouldn't it be exciting to have a forgery -- as long as one knew it was a forgery?

Hello Don,

Yes the second stamp on your Dutch page post has an Halfround cancellation, so does the third stamp although only at the corner. The second issue from 1864 is almost always cancelled by the franco cancel, any other kind of cancel on this issue is rare.
Third row third stamp has a 102 dot cancel this is a place called Terborgh not super rare but very nice to have.

Rows 3/7 are issued in a lot of different types, perforations, paper thicknesses etc etc. If you are patient you can look into that.

Kind regards, Johan

Don - That's a beautiful page, thanks for sharing.

Regarding the 40C Napoleon - I am thinking the same as khj. Why would anyone make a forgery of such quite a common stamp anyway? I have dozens and dozens of these in seemingly all possible ranges of qualities of printing/impressions/inking.
