Hi guys...Got a question about this Expo 67 cover..

1 - The cover printing and stamp printing are in French first..Did they make one with English first..?

2 - Look at the picture below..It "Expo 67" was copy righted in 1963..Even before Canada knew they were to hold the 1967 Expo.?

1) Entirely possible that they also had an English-first version, but I doubt it.

Have you google "Canada bilingual policy"?

2) The organizing committee (by whatever name) would have been in existence for many years before the fair opened.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Expo_67 ... Canada was awarded it in late 1962.

Cheers,

/s/ ikeyPikey

Wert, you may want to wash your hands The stamp was issued by the United Nations (and not by Canada).

"United Nations" was printed in random order on stamps it issued. Sometimes bilingual, others single or even triple language.

Did not say issued by Canada, but the copy right was part of Canada's expo 67...haha

You may be correct Jenny2U about how many languages they were issued in.

Robert, I think the answer to your question is more simple than you think. The card was printed in French-speaking Montreal, so obviously text in French would come first.

Agree with smaugie....anything that came out of Quebec Province, even though bilingual for this event, would favour French first !

Montreal was awarded the rights to the Exposition in Nov. 1962, after the USSR bailed out of hosting the Exposition due to financial and security concerns.
The 1963 copyright date relates to the Expo 67 logo that was featured on all Expo souvenirs etc.
French is the official language of the province of Quebec and the French language is predominantly used first on all signage, documents, products etc.

Renden...i was born and raised in 'La Belle Province'...and every tiime I visit Montreal I feel sorry for the poor anglo tourists when it comes to signage...especially on the highways...road notices etc marked only in French!
The real kicker is seeing a shop display this sign "Bienvenue aux Touristes"...means "welcome tourists"....i guess all tourists understand French...forgive me for going off topic.

Don't let them get you down on the UN stamp, wert. It's actually one of a very lovely set the UN issued in agreement with the Canadian government. These stamps were valid only on mail posted at the UN pavilion during the fair. The denominations are expressed in Canadian currency. So, almost a Canadian stamp!

I also have a postcard from the fair with one of the stamps. A nice souvenir for the recipient.

An extra note. Both post cards were sent to Canadian destinations. Mine to Toronto, yours to Pierrefonds Quebec, a suburb of Montreal.
The post card postal rate in 1967 was 4¢. So while mine has the correct postage to Toronto, yours pays double rate just to get your card across town! I guess the sender preferred that stamp (or may have been a bit of a prude).

Another aside, just because...
The picture on the front of my post card is of the UN pavilion, the building pictured on your stamp.

Cool, eh?

I was fortunate to work at a concession during Expo 67 at the age of 16!...one of the perks was that anyone who worked onsite was given priority entrance to the pavilions....and believe me there were some long queues!...one of the most popular pavilions was the Czech...the Laterna Magika show was a huge sensation!...the USA and USSR pavilions were also very popular. I recall a story that as the workers were setting up the pavilions...there was a parrot on display at the Ethiopian pavilion...in the course of setting up the display the workers taught the parrot to say many local curse words...once this was discovered by the officials...the poor parrot was exiled!
Another big hit was La Ronde...the amusement park....great fun!.p

Another favourite pavilion for me was the Mexico...i enjoyed hearing the mariachi band that played on its terrace each day...i was there so often...you can see me on the printed postcard. That's me in the lower right hand corner...in profile with my left hand touching my chin..or eating something???

On top of that they were printed by the British American Bank
Note company in Ottawa.

Why would it be considered a Canadian stamp? I only see United Nations printed on all examples shown (no mention of Canada).
