New to the group, and my very first post! I have a stamp that I believe to be a Japanese Revenue. Can anyone tell me anything about it? I have spent all day looking for this stamp online, in Scott catalogs, etc. and I can't find it anywhere. I'd really like to know how old it is, if it was for a specific type of duty tax, or anything else. Thank you! Mark

Obviously matches either seal or revenue, I'll have a bo-peep in my revenues folder
Update. due to the lack of a value tablet, I'd suggest an inspection certificate or seal for safety matches.

Geoff and Rod, thank you for your replies. It would make sense to me that it could be a seal or inspection certificate, as that could explain why I have been unable to locate it in my search of revenues. Are there any clues as to how old it might be? |

There are a couple of people who check into this board who really read Japanese, whereas I just have a very elementary understanding of it, and it's very rusty now.
That said, it seems like this might be a manufacturers' trade association (and possibly inspection) label.
The Japanese characters are reading left to right (at least the ones I can read), so this would suggest to me that this is post-WW2, probably late 40's-early 50's(?).
But consider the source -- I could be wrong about all of this. |

That's who I was thinking of, Rod. I bet he'll show up within a day or so.
And nice examples! |

The stamp is indeed a Revenue: issued by the Minister for International Trade & Industry for collection of the distribution tax on matches. The Japanese name of the Minister seems to place it between 1949 amd 2001. |

Hi Mark and all, i just have noticed this post today, and would like to add some additional notes; the detailed information on the two match revenues as listed in "Standard Catalogue of the Japanese Revenue Stamps" by M. Shimomura, 1981 edition are as follows. Articles tax certificate stamps for matches, on regulatory association certificate seal. Used for inner packages of matches. 2nd issue, "industry union", issed June 1st, 1958. Pink (for standard size matches). Shimomura cat. no. 112. This series consists of Pink (for standard size matches), light green (for home size matches), light blue (for flat box matxhes) and light blue (for others). 1st issue, "adjustmently union", issed March 1st, 1953. Blue (for others). Shimomura cat. no. 111. This series consists of red (for standard size matches), green (for home size matches), brown (for flat box matches) and blue (for others). Hope this helps. - Hironobu -edited for typo |

rod222, thanks for the kind words. As my knowledge is quite skewed towards odd things rather than ordinary philately, I would say "all niche things Japanese." -Hironobu |
