In Windows 10, you could install a Linux bash shell and then write a bash script. |

Thank you very much, gentlemen. I'll try the rename utility first.
I have a batch rename facility in ACDSee, it adds characters, but does not have ability to remove.

Rod Faststone Image Resizer (free) http://www.faststone.org/FSResizerDownload.htmDoes all kinds of batch processing including renaming. I cannot recommend this app enough. The renaming utility allows file naming masks but not sure you will find one that can strip X amount of characters from a file name. Although this free app is old and crusty and takes a bit of learning, it will strip the first 4 characters. http://www.1-4a.com/rename/Don |

Thank you Don, I'll have a lookeesee over the next week.
Australia has in excess of 800 stamps with the value 45c I am making a "sort" set to enable easy ID. I need to strip the Catalogue number, so as not to offend Amos.

The programme I use is Winsome File Renamer, it's as easy as, & does exactly what you need. |

For me this one has done the best job, and it has lots of options: "Rename Master", I use version 3.9
You can really do a lot with it including preview, wildcards, numbering and so on.
