I recently acquired a small lot of commercial first-day covers prepared by the Texas Refinery Corporation (not Texaco). The earliest I have is 1960 and the latest I have seen was 1964. A scan of one is below.

I believe the Texas Refinery Corp sold various lubricants by using field salesmen. These covers apparently were sent to the corporation's officers, selected employees, and field salesmen.

Does any know who was behind these covers? Was it simply the corporation's marketing department, or was there a specific collector in marketing, or a corporation officer who was a collector who promoted the covers?

How early did these covers begin and how long did their issuance continue? Is there a checklist of them?

Thanks

Don

James McCusker's FDC website has 30+ of these for sale. Search by cachet maker.

I believe the spirit behind these covers was Ed Richardson, a prominent philatelist and the Treasurer or Texas Refining Corp. during that period. While Ed's primary interest was in Canada and BNA it did extend to other areas.

Perf12, Thanks for the Linns link. A good start.

John Becker and redwoodrandy, thanks for the McCusker link. It looks like his offerings are close to a complete check list. His covers are a little pricey! I don't intend to collect the TRC first days systematically, but there are a few that I would like to have and will continue to watch for them at lower prices.

jarnick, thanks for the info re: Ed Richardson. His participation seems likely. Wonder if he was related to Fort Worth oil executive Sid Richardson?
