Hi guys...We know proofs are a part of the stamp world...Was wondering what percentage of proofs get to the hands of collectors..

Is it 10% of the total number of stamps produced..5%...1%...or less..?

Why I am asking was one of my proofs has re-entries on it...It is my Scott 72P Newfoundland proof..It has been identified by Ralph on re-entries.com....

Now the big question, lets say there are only .5% of each stamp has proofs....If so, how many have re-entries on them...Must be extremely low..See pictures below.

So, what is the % of proofs to be collected..????
How many proofs are printed per stamp run...???

Robert

As far as I know there are no actual numbers on quantity for plate proofs. They were done during production to check the condition of the plate, and after repairs in some situations. There are also post production proofs made for favors or trade samples.

Here are a few of mine:

Major Re-entry 15Pv:

Pane A, Position 31 plate scratches:

16Pi iv Double Epaulette:

Enjoy, Mike

Far more printer's waste has made it into the marketplace than anyone ever imagined. Very sad really - such a corruption of process.

Proofs are not printers waste they were done on very high quality paper usually mounted on card (some have been soaked off). They were used during production to help identify flaws that may need to be corrected and also as a record of the plate. Printers waste would be stamps printed on normal paper and should have been destroyed by the security printer.

Mike, with what you got and more of what I got and everyone else out there..These proof readers needed glasses...haha

Now Mike, the question you have to ask yourself is knowingly that not a great amount of proofs were printed..And as your re-entries and mine are prevalent, how many re-entry proofs exist..???...Big question...

CanadaStamp, Mike is correct..they were printed for quality assurance and determining flaws before mass production...When I was a printer years ago, we did the exact same thing as they did with proofs.

Robert

Obviously there is a greater number of stamps printed than proofs. We may never know how many proof sheets were printed or how many still exist some may well have been destroyed after being used to check the plates.

True Mike..For all we know your proof re-entries(and my couple) might be the only ones left in existence, we will probably never know.
