Hi guys...There are lots of new collectors reading our posts (And collectors from other countries having interest)...These new people are probably embarrassed to look stupid in other peoples eyes because of their lack of knowledge..I think maybe we should help with new members and keep them in the stampcommunity, keep them interested in this hobby.

New members, if you are considering Canadian (and Provinces)stamp collecting, please go out and buy the Unitrade catalogue for loads of information...Also become a member (not expensive) of BNAPS (link below).

http://www.bnaps.org/

I will give you one quick example that new collectors run into and have no idea what it means and maybe even afraid to ask for information, feeling they may look stupid..REMEMBER, THERE IS NEVER A STUPID QUESTION.

EXAMPLE

On page 63 of the 2017 Unitrade catalogue there is a Canadian Scott 75 (Queen Victoria)...Reading most of the identifiers is pretty easy, but Scott 75xx (precanceled stamps) says there are 3 different styles of precancels...Below is taken from Unitrade Catalogue.

Now I have posted 2 of those styles below to show you what the meaning of the Unitrade identifiers...Same stamp, but 2 different precancels

I will give other members a chance to post LINKS to pertinent stamp information..We should help ALL new members feel comfortable on this site to ask questions, ask for information and treat them with respect so as to make them feel comfortable and treated as equals...

Any input is greatly appreciated..Lets keep all links here under one roof for help for them and us to.

Thanks,Robert

Good thoughts - but this has always been a knowledgeable, welcoming forum - unlike the collectors forum on Delphi. If I could add one thought to Wert's - when a new member shows up here with Post No. 1 - send them a greeting. I do it often - but not often enough. It would be nice if every newcomer got a dozen or more welcomes. Oh - and when you send them a welcome - recommend they activate their d-mail function.

I agree with both wert and Canada Stamp. We should be patient and polite with "newbie posts"......with all posts for that matter. I remember posting some stuff and receiving the "rude" or "sarcastic" response. That should never happen and welcoming new people on this Forum should receive our attention - more as it concerns me !
Thanks guys !

Some forums have people who have nothing better than to say "use the search".

Sometimes I think we all have a tendency to dump a "newby question" with the response, "use the search", especially when it's a question that is asked a lot.

Most newbies who have inherited a deceased relative's beginning collection have one interest, what's it worth?

It gets rather difficult telling a child that their parent had no clue about collecting stamps.

Special thanks to Renden and angore; they often welcome new folks in the 'Introduce Yourself' and ' inherited' topics.

On vbulletin boards, the search can be near useless or painful to use. If they are just dropping in, they cannot have been expected to master the logic of the forum software. I actually think having the discussion is worth something - contact.

Just a comment. Thanks for the information first of all. I don't have the perforation tool, and scaled the tool to actual size on my IPhone, took screen pic. Saved me a lot of questions.

Thank you wert for the statement "REMEMBER, THERE IS NEVER A STUPID QUESTION." As a newbie, I am thankful for the 'welcoming' I received on this forum. It is overwhelming starting out and any assistance would be appreciated. The input of the three different styles is duly noted.
I was lucky to be welcomed by Renden, angore, 51studebaker, CanadaStamp who have been responsive to your Topic Review. Thanks to everyone.
