Bought this recently, one of those purchases you do in haste and repent at leisure. I use a specialized album with spaces for all the plate varieties of SG7 and felt I was getting good price although it looked from the question mark that he wasn't sure either.

Anyway after trying to place this in my album I realized, plate 6 was apparently not used for this stamp. So... any ideas what plate it may be? I already have plates 9 and 10 and after comparison with those I am just not sure.

I know we have some GB specialists on here. Any ideas welcome!

Not sure it's a 1d black plate going by these, but I'm definitely not an expert

I'm not either which may be a reason why I shouldn't trust a seller who obviously isn't one either. I did not pay much for this, it's a nice cancel and I can probably find a place for it. I feel foolish for not checking my album at first but that's life.

I couldn't get anything from your link. I am having to use my laptop today as my wife and son have the other computers in our home tied up. Maybe tomorrow I can look up what you referenced. Thanks.

Stamps

It's from the Spink website, and is a reference collection of the 1d black plates helpfully arranged by letters. As you say, it's an attractive stamp, four margins - worth a flutter!

How odd. My iPad is taking me there effortlessly. Perhaps it thinks I'm rich enough to bid at the Spink auctions.

The frame breaks in the NE corner are typical of SG 8 plate 23

Spink sold the Nissen reconstructions of plates 1-11. Before the sale, they scanned them and made them available on their site.
If you can't get there with a link to the lower page, you can reach the scans by:

going to spink.com
selecting "Private Treaty" from the menu bar
selecting "Nissen Reconstructions" from the menu bar

There are a few errors in the plating, but overall, just about all of them are correct.

For later plates, you'll be best off getting the CD of the scans of the imprimatur sheets. For more information and a list of references, see: http://www.sturstamps.com/help.htm

oh yeah - if you happen to have an imperforate with corner letters "CG," you can check this site: http://victoria.cgpostal.com

..."and I can probably find a place for it"

Indeed you should for although it is a SG 8 stamp it should be displayed as a Worn Plate example (which is SG 9) as it is a good example of that as seen from the very weak right side. So, instead of a 7 you got a 9.

The seller replied and apologized for his error, said he now thinks it may be a plate 5.

But I think the last poster may be right and it is SG 9. At least it is a better copy than the one I now have.

There are no North East frame breaks in the SG7 Plate 5 AL stamps...and the L is placed differently. The North East frame breaks and the position of the check letters all point to a worn plate(SG9) plate 23.
