Please have a look at the attached scans of a QL38. I'm not sure what has happened there. Maybe at one point it was mounted in an album between the pics and picked up some ink... or maybe through the printing process before gumming?
most likely an off-set (or is it set-off, I can never remember which is the correct term). it happens during the printing process when the sheet is laid on top of another sheet that the ink hasn't dried, and some of the image is transferred to the back of the upper sheet.
Thanks, Kuhli, that was my first thought but I wasn't sure if the stamp would have been gummed by then. If it was, the off-set would have gone with the gum when it was used. Steve
