I'm in need of some expert ID help. Can't find this postal stationery anywhere. Can I please get your thoughts on the ID and your opinion on condition? (I don't think the condition is that great, but what do I know?) There is a document in the envelope dated 1877 if that helps.

Thanks!
dave

In the Scott catalog, it looks like you have design type U40. Looks like you have the vermilion stamp, which would make it one of catalog numbers U142-U147; I'll leave it up to you/others to ID the envelope color.

My eyes aren't what they used to be, so hopefully someone can confirm the type U40.

It looks like United Postal Stationery Society (UPSS), Die 52, red on cream envelope, Scott #U144, with a catalog value of about $12 if in perfect used condition

Stamped envelope identifying help.

Interesting corner card. If you google The International and Great Northern R. R. Co. you get International Great Northern Railroad, Fort Bend county Texas. If you google 26 Exchange Place, New York you get Westhampton Beach NY.

For researching old railroads, go to the contemporary records. Editions of Poor's Manual of the Railroads of the United States is readily available as a scanned out of copyright book. In the 1876-77 edition, pages 434-436, give all sorts of statistics such as the line ran between Houston and Longview, TX and has some branches listed, revenues, rolling stock data, etc. All the officers lived in TX or NY, with the address of the financial offices matching the corner card of the cover above. More information than you ever wanted.
