Part of 1) USPS history and 2) your tax history (applicable to US citizens). I found this pin in my consolidated collection and there's a letter that goes with it. With only cursory research, I can tell that these pins are awarded to postal workers who drive postal vehicles and sold on ebay.

I'm curious which forum this type of material should be posted in on stampcommunity.com .

Thought this would be a good post for a Friday night. Comments welcome. Have a great weekend!

These were accompanied with a small card as well. A while back I acquired some materials from a post office and a group of these cards were included. But sadly, no pins.

The reverse of each card is similar to the one on the bottom, the only difference being the number of years.

@mml1942 @Rod thanks for the input! Did a search first and didn't find anything on this site; happy to get some responses. Not the most popular piece of postal history, but interesting nonetheless…

My father, who was a letter carrier, received these, as well as a "million mile" accident-free driving award. The latter was in the form of a plaque and if I remember correctly, also a pin.

I disagree.
Never underestimate the collector out there.

I never throw anything out, any link to Philately, and it gets stored away.
Just this past week, I have met a colleague who collects Stamp Dealer Ephemera.

I can now pass on my hoard, that for years appeared to be unwanted flotsam,
to someone who is genuinely delighted to receive the material.

I think the pin and the awards are fabulous historical pieces.

These are not specific to the postal department but rather a part of a nation-wide safety program run by National Safety Council. The current pins and cards can be purchased from them at http://www.nsc.org/act/Recognition/...r-award.aspx

The cards are perhaps a bit more postal specific since they are printed with 'Postmaster' signature. I assume that if a group wanted to purchase a number of these the National Safety Council would customize them.

@Filechaser Thanks for your comment. That's quite an achievement of your father.

@Rod Great reply! My comment was more in context of search results on this site, but I'm happy that you spoke up for Ephemera collectors. I didn't even know that term before today… probably should be more careful with my generalizations

Sorry Jonathan,
I was trying to encourage you, comes from my defence mechanism, from years of collecting Sand dune stamps and cinderellas.

They were not tolerated, in the old days, as they are now.

Ephemera is the "seasoning" to Philately, it adds a touch of spice, and flavour of the passing years.

The pin and certificate from the post office were for letter carriers and motor vehicle employees only you would get one every year that you were involved in an accident, for your 30th year you would be honored with the million mile award. Each office and each postmaster would honor their employees different ways. When I started with the post office (1969) the local office would give the award & certificate when I left my local post office would give the award, certificate and a coat. One of the other local offices would give the award & certificate and take the honorees out for lunch.

@Rod No worries! I like seasoning and have a bunch in my collection… plus, nothing like a spirited discussion to make a forum come alive.

@Leejb1 Thanks for sharing. Great info! I had no idea I would get the full story when I found the pin amongst the other ephemera.
