I think these Latvia stamps are so interesting. One is printed on cut up maps and one is printed on incomplete currency notes. I was just wondering if anyone collects these and if these could be put together to make a complete picture!
A well known subject, since 100 years ago. And the answer to both questions is Yes. It's highly collectable and there are complete maps (not cheap!) around.
During the early years of Latvia's independence there was an extreme shortage of paper for printing of stamps. The first issue was printed on the backs of German military maps. Other issues were printed on the backs of 3 different types of unfinished bank notes(the one shown and 2 others), sheets of thin cigarette paper, and lined writing paper. Proofs of the early issues exist on on the backs of various jar & can labels.
two questions regarding this Latvian 20s stamp from 1923, what perforation does the catalog mention cause my measurement shows perf 10 all around and is the wm I uploaded here correct thanks
The watermark most often seen is a wavy line. But pieces of a watermark "Pactien Ligat Mills 1858" may also be seen. The stamp is known perforate 10, 10x11.5, 11.5, and 11.5x10
