The Stamps Of Portugal.

Thanks for the help! I could not find this stamp in the catalogue I have been using (US/BNA). I do not have the funds to buy a Scotts at this point.

This gentleman tears a Scott catalogue apart, and sells the countries by portion.

A great way to keep up to date if you specialise in a particular country, and not wish the entire catalogue.

Scotts or SG is practically useless in this field.

After the assassination of Rei Carlos I on February 1,1908 followed by the disposssession of Manuel II, Portugal was declared republic on October 5,1910 and by the order of Avrão Jústiniano Azevedo, Minister for Ultramár Português, dt. October 21,1910, all 1898 and 1903 Carlos I Mouchon type stamps remaining at Casa da Moeda, Lisboa, Portugal were overprinted REPÚBLICA in red or some in green.

I went to the library today and checked out a Scott's catalog (2005). I think I am still looking in the wrong spot. I checked out volume 5, P-SL, so that I could look through the Portugal section. I could not find it. In reviewing your responses, did you mean it falls under "Lourenço Marques" and not "Portugal"? Thanks for your help!

Worldwide catalogues typically follow straight alphabetical order, rather than grouping countries/colonies, so you should find it under "L" unless Scott puts it with Mozambique.

Just an opinion:

I have lots of Stamp Catalogues........if a WW collector on a budget would buy "all" specialized catalogues out there, the value of the Catalogues would probably be higher than the stamps valuation

persevere, it can be daunting sometimes finding stamps,
we have all been there.

TIP: Using Scott, they have a fabulous Index at back of the catalogue
you would simply look up "L" for Laurenco Marques"
They will tell you what part of the Scott set it lies at.
That goes for any stamp, with a name in balck at bottom of stamp...Dedeagh for example.

Thanks, Rod. That is helpful. I was finally able to find the stamp last night in the right volume of Scotts! Since it was the first time I used Scotts, I also noticed that it does not appear to offer as many different price points as the other catalogue I have been using (US/BNA). For example, in the US/BNA catalog there is a plate block value, used value, and unused value. I only see two separate values in the Scotts. Am I reading it incorrectly? Thanks for your help!

Ted, I don't think so. Seems par for the course.
In any given country discipline, you will find a hiearchy of catalogues, all serving different levels of collecting, and affordability.

For Example I use Scott as my "go to" nuts and bolts catalogue,
and others for my special collections, Romania, Turkey, and Brazil.

In your country of choice, depending on your disposable income, you will end up buying catalogues to broaden your knowledge.

I seem to have inadvertently "checked out" from this discussion. Quickly re-read everything just now. Joy's post yesterday about the 2015 Selos Postais Colonias Portuguesas is right on. Even though it says 2015, this is the current edition. I got three copies from Joaquim Macas when I was in Lisbon last September. One for me; others donated to the ISPP library in California and the Rocky Mountain Philatelic Library in Denver.

The editor is J. Miranda da Mota, a well known expertizer of Portugal and colonies stamps, and the "Portuguese equivalent" of Steve Washburne in the US.

Glad to see that this thread has returned. Unfortunately for me, I still haven't started the Portugal and Azores Ceres projects that I talked about in May, 2017. I did get some Vintage Reproduction Scott pages for early Portugal as part of a collection I bought in 2018. But those still won't cover all the shade and perf varieties.

Most of my philatelic time over the past two years has been spent in down-sizing my former world wide collection. Some stuff has gone to auction. The Rocky Mountain Philatelic Library, to date, has received donations of 43 single country manila folders of album pages, with more to come.

To update Joy's comment from March 28, 2018, there is a new, 2019, edition now out of the Mundiphil catalogue for former Portuguese colonies. I got my copy from Macas in Lisbon in late July.
