for see watermarks , you generally need watermark fluid or ronsonol lighter fuel and a black plate to see the contrast
And more important, you check at the back of the stamps not at the front

I believe it is a watermark 6.
The U277 was only issued in watermarks 6 & 7.
W7 is rather simple ( A "U" entwined with an "S"), whereas W6 is more fancy with "USPOD" all entwined together, with "82" off to the side. |

The watermark, which is fairly large, is often in the body of whole envelope. It is nowhere near the embossed design normally. |

I stand corrected here, this is a partial Scott watermark 6. The year date of paper manufacture (given as two numbers and not present here) is positioned to the right of the intertwined USPOD. |

The scan of the Wikimedia Commons example is indeed on Fawn paper. However, I believe the cut square shown to us by the OP is on white paper. |
