This is the reverse of the POW card from Camp 20 - Gravenhurst to Germany dated May 1942. It has been heavily censored. I was wondering if this was done in Canada or Germany. Would the Canadian censors have done this or would they refuse to send the whole card ??

The sender was a Kapitanleutnant Hans Sch(afer)?. I have seen another card from him dated July 1944 but this time from Camp 44. I have not been able to find any more info about him and I cannot read German.

It might be useful to show the postmarks and censor marks on the other side.

This would be done by Canadian censors, to keep sensitive or damaging info from reaching Germany.

The censored lines begin "Danke bei den", "Thank you for the ...". The earlier text begins with noting receipt of 3 packages, the first with meat (that would be canned, of course), cigarettes and cookies.

Nothing special. Just the BASE APO postmark with both Canadian straight line EXAMINED BY CENSOR BD 221 and a circular German Berlin censor handstamp.

Thank you very much. I wonder what could possibly follow those words that would worry the censor. My understanding is that prisoners at the Canadian camps were well fed and treated.

I was just thinking that it could be a German censor if the blacked out words said something like he was well cared for and well fed etc. Perhaps that was info they did not want to get spread in Germany.

The second part of the letter sounds like a "but we will win the war although the **CENSORED** is happening here." That's the consolation for the not so nice behaviour of the "English".
