DEFINITIVE ISSUES (1966 - 1980)

The decimalisation of Australian currency occurred on February 14, 1966, St. Valentines Day, making obsolete the pound, shilling and pence (£sd) which was in use since 1788. Australia issued its own £sd after Federation (1901), silver coins were minted in 1910, copper coins in 1911 and banknotes in 1913. The first stamps were printed in 1913.

Types 1 & 2 of the 40 cent Dampier stamps are the result of the use of a 2-on nickel die on which the denominations were separately engraved. The most easily recognised difference is that with Type 1 the surrounds and centres of "40c" show shading dashes and dots heavier and more regular than those in Type 2, with some variation in length of dashes.

The shades of these two waratah stamps are very slight. The first cylinders has more pink showing more white tones in the petals, particularly the two lowest and that pointing towards "30c". The explanation provided by the Philatelic Bulletin for the new set of cylinders was that the previous set was unserviceable. In fact, the Note Printing Branch had by mistake destroyed the original set of cylinders for the waratahs on May 17, 1971 while the issue was still current. When a new printing was required prior to the replacement of the waratah stamp by the 30 cents Aboriginal Art definitive which was due for issue on September 1971.
ACSC 489) 1968. Soil, Science Congress & General Assembly of World Medical Association. 5 cents. Perforation 13½. No watermark. Yellow, Cyan, Magenta and Black

Sure, first I should tell you that the single stamps of Type 1 and Type II were cut and pasted from two blocks of 4 that I have, so the stamps could fit in uniform with the other navigators. So I will show the original blocks of 4 stamps and the differences enlarged.

1966: Blue. Type I (top stamps). Blue Type 2 (bottom stamps)

1966: Dull Blue Type II (top stamps). Blue Type 2 (bottom stamps).

Left: Type 1 shows darker shading dashes and dots more regular around the surrounds and the centres of "4" & "0"

Right: Type II shows much lighter shading dashes and dots around the same area with some variation in the length of dashes .

Hi displaced_hippie

Like the US, Australia printed many beautiful stamps, I just started increasing what was once a very scant collection of US stamps from two very generous American collectors.

Hi Blaamand

Glad to have helped. It takes a lot of fiddling around to get the stamps in the proper position for the presentation to look presentable, but at the end it all works out.

I have a few blocks of 4 from Queen Victoria to Queen Elizabeth II, most are scarce to rare. One block of 4 I have is recorded as the only one of its kind and is very rare.

Hi Blaamand

Here is a link to an earlier entry I posted on Stamp Community showing the only known set in existence (the uniqueness of the stamp had been verified in the 2015 issue of the ACSC - Australian Commonwealth Specialists' Catalogue).

They are cracked plate varieties, and the very rare, very early state of plate crack is at the top; completing a set which can only be achieved with the very early cracked plate makes the set a very unique combination.

If you want to see the unique block of 4 enlarged just let me know.
