Does anyone have any idea what office this stamp was canceled at?

W. Bruce Graham in Ontario Broken Circles calls this type D1 (Enclosed Broken Circle) and lists on page 239 some 35 offices which used this cancel. However, none of them start with the letter A, as this one seems to.

My first thought was Acton, but the name seems to be about 9 characters long.

Any ideas?

Jan

There was a post office at Acton Vale C.E. (Canada East) which would account for the longer name.

Yes James is correct I think. The date is October 1870 something. There is a lower left dot, which indicates either a first Ottawa or early Montreal printing. The shade I see on my monitor is like the early rose type, so I would say first Ottawa. I don't know what the "00" at the top is.

Thanks for the replies. I agree that Acton Vale is the most likely. I had difficulty in seeing the province as starting with a C or Q.

The colour does look more like a first Ottawa printing, but I measure the horizontal perfs as 11.6 to 11.7 which would point more to Montreal? (but my perf guage is old, so I am not sure exactly how accurate it is, or how good my perfing skills are.)

I was hoping to determine when the cancel was in use to help narrow down the time frame. No such luck.

Thank you

Jan

The 00 may be a QC, We have an Acton Vale in Québec, here an old photo of the post office, it's now the library , but I know the place because of the very beautifull small railroad station

I just checked the PHSC online database (accessible by members only).

The Acton Vale cancel on the stamp is listed as type D1 in the Broken Circle classification, as stated by j2186. It is known used from 1873 to 1879. The bottom is inscribed "QUE", and where the 00 is at the top, D1 often has AM or PM instead.

There is no illustration of the Acton Vale D1 cancel, but there is hand drawn one from Peterboro with AM at the top.

If the stamp is perforated 11.5 x 12, it fits in the date span. That perforation goes from 1872 up to 1882.
