Can any one tell me what value this cover is? It was found in a box of mixed USA covers purchased at auction some years ago. I seem to recall that certain branches of the military used different colors to cancel the mail. I cannot tell where this is from, if any expert can tell me I would be most grateful.

For a quick answer, the military canceled very little mail during the civil war. Color means nothing at all. This envelope is from someone in the Illinois Volunteer Militia and is canceled at the "Chicago, Ills" post office. Value can only be determined by selling it.

I think, but am not sure that the curved "U.States 10" is a normal 'mail to British North America' hand stamp and has nothing to do with the Military. I'm not an expert though.

Nice cancel.

Per stampcrow, that's what it is. The marking is thought to be from Detroit, which makes sense for a cross-border routing. The cover is obviously short paid.

Camp Long was one a eight makeshift camps that were erected on the outskirts of Chicago, Illinois to handle all of the men from the city and nearby towns who were showing up at the Chicago recruiting stations to volunteer to serve in the Union Army. The 19th Illinois was an infantry regiment that was mustered into existence on June 17, 1861 at Camp Long for their initial outfitting and basic training. It was an interesting unit in that they wore odd uniforms called Zouaves with giant red pantaloons and other features which made them look like they were in an Arabian army. They were lucky to have suffered only moderate casualties in their 3 years of existence with 60 enlisted men killed in action or died of their wounds, and 4 officers who were killed or died of wounds. They also had 101 enlisted men who died of diseases which was common during the war.

The value of this cover in my opinion is not high since it was sent from a basic training camp with ordinary postage and no military markings rather than at a time when the regiment was actually in the war and using free franking and perhaps a military marking or two. Still, someone interested in this particular regiment might like to have it.
