The Principality of Mustang (a Nepalese corruption of sMan-thang -pronounced Moo-stang) sits within the Kingdom of Nepal, along the border with China.
When the modern state of Nepal was taking form in the 1780s, Mustang managed to maintain its autonomy. After the Nepalese revolution of 1951, the central authorities increased their control. During the 1960s, after the Dalai lama had fled to India and Chiness armies established control over Tibet, Mustang was a centre for guerrilla operations against the Chinese.
The Nepalese consequently closed off the region in an attempt to deal with these issues. It was only in 1991 that the region was opened to foreign tourists. Purportedly this postal card was overprinted for local use during the period that the province was closed to outside visitors.
