Just came across an early Belgian with a 77 numeral cancel on it. Anyone know what town that is? More important to me, is there any list on the internet where I can look up Belgian numeral cancels? Thanks in advance for any help I get.

77 is the town of Maeseyck, you need to describe the cancel in detail. |

You might Google this. There is a Barefoot catalog that lists them.

If it is the 18 vertical bars then the town is Terwagne, if it is the number surrounded by dots in a diamond shape then it is CHARLEROI. |

Floortrader - brilliant information - do you know where to find this online?
EdziuMM - I have put aside a few of those Belgian numerals waiting to be organized - glad to see you are taking the lead |

Reviving this thread - have about a dozen old Belgian stamps from 1850s-60s with numeral cancels. Wondering if anyone has ran across an online list in the last few years to aid in identifying them - I looked but didn't find anything as yet. The catalogue mentioned is available, but buying a whole catalogue for a few stamps seems like overkill...
Thanks! Greg |

Thank you for the generous offer!
There are nine legible ones I'm looking to identify - 79, 45, 75, 26, 97 (could be 87 instead), 73, 123, 24 & 4. All from stamps issued between 1849-61. Any ID's much appreciated!

You're welcome, Greg. Are you able to post images? The numbers can be associated with different locations depending on the specific cancellation.

The Gespecialiseerde Catalogus van Belgische Afstempelingen 1849-1910 has a value associated with each postmark. My copy is from 1999. I'm not sure if the actual value is useful except to compare how common the postmark is on a particular stamp. The common cities have a zero and the highest "values" are around 7000. I'll spell the cities the same way the catalogue does(it's in Dutch and French) and put the "value" in parentheses. The "values" for the medallions are for the watermarked issue without a frame around the LL.
79 is Marche (1250) 45 is Gand (0) 75 is Lokeren (200) 26 is Chatelineau (150) 97 is Poperinghe (350) or if 87 it's Nieuport (550) 73 is Liege (0) 123 is actually 123 A.1 and is listed as Verviers Annexe (400) 24 (with 8 Barres) is Bruxelles (0) 4 is Anvers (0)

Thanks so much for the info Jim - much appreciated!
That 2nd stamp (with 45) is the only medallion with the framed watermark. I may pick up this catalogue at some point (sometimes think I like collecting catalogues almost as much as stamps) but this is perfect for now.
