I have some letter and card flown on the Graf Zeppelin flight of October 11-15,1928 from Friedrichshafen to the USA.One is date stamped at New York October 16 10AM at New York NY11,another one is date stamped at New York NY10 and a third one is date stamped at New York NY12.I was told that New York NY11 means that it was dropped from the Zeppelin as it passed over New York City and that New York NY10 means mail flown to Lakehurst. Is it correct? And what means date stamped at New York NY12?
Thanks for any answer and explanation.

The best way is to contact us is to use the 'Send Note To Staff' link at lower right hand side of each post. I have sent you an email, if you reply with the images I will post for you.

The 10, 11, and 12 around the New York dial rims are machine numbers.
All 3 have the same central "10-am" time slug.
I believe these were all handled exactly the same.

I agree with John, these all appear to have been off-loaded at Lakehurst when the Zeppelin arrived there and then flown to New York by connecting flight where they were backstamped there and given there was so much mail it appears that the New York Post Office used three different cancelling machines to handle all of this mail in a timely way.
