Hello all Does anyone know what stamp this is? I don't think it's Russian. The date on it, Oct' 27, 1860, doesn't ring a bell. (edit) It's from Montenegro,1910. How would one identify it without knowing? The country's name is not on the stamp.

The name of the country is on the stamp. If you can transliterate the top line you will get Pochte Tsrne Gore. Tsrna Gora (nowadays Crna Gora) is Montenegro. |

Nice one, we learn something every day. Previously if I saw "Rope" or "Ropa" I knew Montenegro. Now I can read it as Gora. 1907 Steiner Page 6. |

It's always intrigued me how "Montenegro" came about. Charna/cherno is slav for "black", Gora/gore means a hill or mount so we have "Black Hills", but no, we go for the latin "Monte Negro".
I can see Doris Day having a tough time with "Take me back to the Montenegro of Dakota", doesn't quite scan... |

Don't forget the strong Latin influence on the SW Balkans. The Southern slavs built their new states on heavily romanized land. Plus, we have the influence of the Republic of Venice on the Adriatic lands up to the end of the XVII century. |
