I originally bought quite a number of US and foreign stamp collections from Greg Manning. After they closed I bought mostly from Regency-Superior (stamp, cover, and book collections). Both companies are gone now. I hope I'm not a jinx!

I do like Kelleher's offerings of collections, but are there other auctions I should consider? Your thoughts?

Done lots of business with both Greg Manning and Regency . Kelleher is now my present firm to buy large collections .
It all depends on what your selling ,if it is general collections then I would go with Kelleher's but if there is specialized expensive collections then my choice would be Cherrystone .

I should add that certain types of collections are better sold out of the United States .
My collection is more a research and reference collection with many unusual collections added into it ,for that reason it is better sold thru the likes of SANDAFAYRE Ltd. . My wife and daughters are instructed to call Vince at Sandafayre .

Other popular auction firms for collections are Dale Enterprises and Dutch Country Auctions.

Rasdale is another auction house that does well with large collections.

jarnick: I have a collection in Rasdale's auction occurring in a bit over a week. I've also bought some good stuff from them, as well as Kelleher.

The key word here is "large collections" in the title . What is large ?????? . If you are selling a worldwide collection of 25,000 stamps yes some of those other firms would work or if your selling a country collection for $500.00 to $1,000 .00 any firm will get you a fair price .
But when your selling a Tibet collection into the thousands of dollars ,I would go with Cherrystone or Kelleher .
Buyers of large collection trend to certain firms ,you need to understand were are the buyers for your type of material.

The way I read this the question is about buying collections, not selling them. The aswer to that is to look at all the catalogs you can. Which is a good idea before selling as well, actually.

Thanks - I will check these companies. I've bought and sold through Kelleher, and have a set of Kansas-Nebraska FDCs listed in their current catalog. (lot 787). I'm especially interested in checking Rasdale, since I'm only about a five hour drive from there.

Also, don't forget Stamp Auction Network. Go to http://stampauctionnetwork. com and select the auction houses you're interested in and register. Then select and save your search criteria of items you're looking for. They will send you email alerts when something relevant gets listed.

Siegel is a must for large lots if you can hit it right as far as price goes. The lots tend to fetch healthy bids but that is because of the uakity contents. I once purchased a two carton lot from Siegel which ended up yielding $50,000 in solid CV. I actually found a lonely old glassine that contained a bunch of E1-E9 Specual Deliveries which were MNH!

I am also a huge Rasdales fan. I have 8 lots in their auction this week and knowing the contents someone will get quite a deal. I hope to pick up some juicy large lots in the same auction to fill the Winter months.
