I picked up these two covers - not much value. A philatelist stayed there in 1948 for a few days and sent some letters home or to a friend. I don't know if it is a hotel still, but according to Google Maps, it is surrounded by a few bigger buildings now.

1. His/her Mellbourne cover went through the machine canceller twice, after being re-orientated.
2. He was travelling West, perhaps by train, and took and used the Hotel's stationery.
3. He had his own Air Etiquettes? I do not recognise those as Australian.
4. He was using Booklets.
5. Scouting Thematic.

6. He/she sent them to Carpinteria, the hometown of my college, University of California, Santa Barbara. I didn't have my first drink there, but I did have quite a few drinks there. (Very hard to study when you are right on the beach.) |

Hi Steve Nice blocks of 6 stamps, you should gauge the perforations to see if they are 13˝ x 14 (the scarce 1937 Koala and 1938 Kookaburra issues). They were still being used in the 1940s. I also noticed that the bottom envelope has a cancellation mentioning the 1948 Pan-Pacific Scout Jamboree Dec 29, 1948 -Jan 9, 1949 (thin paper on the right). Rob |

Quote: God, I used to drink there when I was 14 and going to school at Taylors business college! At 14 I was an apprentice bricklayer and was forced to drink 3 pints of beer after work every day. In winter it was the pits more so. Only thing I hate more than drinking is drunks. Why did I start work so earily? Because I wrapped a chair around a teacher. Next day I had a job with a bricklaying gang. |

Nice one KGV Collector... I can't stand the taste of beer anymore... I was a bourbon man, and when I retired back in 2005, I have never been back into a club or pub, or touched alcohol! |
