Hi, I found this today while sorting through an old box of stamps ans covers.. A bit dirty with age to be honest but unopened. Mailed in 1964, 43 years ago. Thought I would share and ask if anyone has any knowledge / comments about this. It was mailed from Melbourne Australia, with wording Skygazers Watching Guillaux from Flinders Street Melbourne. Obviously they were not watching him hahahahah since he made his memorable flight in 1914, 50 years earlier and sadly died in 1917.

Guillaux was a French pilot who did airshows in Australia in 1914 but became more famous in July 1914 when he flew a hydroplane carrying the first airmail from Melbourne to Sydney The flight was recorded as the longest flight in the world at the time.

Michael

The cover clearly states the people watching were in 1914.

Guillaux flew the Bleriot MONOPLANE shown on the cover. (Single wing)

Guillaux also flew the first SEAPLANE which was referred to at the time, as a HYDROPLANE

His feats included flying the first seaplane in Australia on May 11, 1914 — the Maurice Farman "hydro-aeroplane" owned by Lebbeus Hordern.

Lebbeus was a member of the wealthy family which owned the Sydney department store Anthony Horderns, and had imported the floatplane that same year.

Guillaux flew the hydroplane, going down in Australia aviation history, but his most exciting feat was in July 1914 when he carried the first airmail from Melbourne to Sydney- it was the longest flight in the world at the time.

What confuses me, is that it has a machine cancellation,
but addressed to no one

All I can guess, it may have been a gift on a memorial flight, by an airline company.

Yes, I believe it was a promotional gift.. I do not know from who though and since I have not opened the envelope I guess I wont easily find out. I may have others somewhere.. will have to keep looking
