Hi. My question is this. Does this fancy star cancel in green add value to this stamp? Thanks, Robert

Hi thepackrat, can you tell if the star is under or over the other cancel?
This may be impossible to tell.
Is there any indication on the reverse side?
Good luck

Trying to tell which cancel came first in a scenario like this is usually not reliably doable. Optical illusions abound.
This is pretty clearly as everyone else has stated - a bogus fancy applied over a pen cancelled stamp. |

Wow thanks for the replies. I never thought the cancellation could be a fake. How can I be sure though? Where do the few of you see a washed manuscript cancel. Sorry for the questions but I am trying to learn more than I did when I collected as a child.
stampmaster - sorry but I cannot tell if it is over or under because I do not see the other cancellation.
Thanks everyone for your replies and help. Greatly appreciated.
Would a larger scan help if I was able to do one? Robert

Robert, look for the 3 diagonal (sharp almost vertical angle, going left to right) lines through Washington's face and collar. |

51Studebaker - Thanks for the night vision technology or whatever you did there. It shows a lot and I can now see the cancellation marks on my scan. I sure a glad I stumbled onto this site. I have been reading a lot of the threads and learning. Now I have an ethical question. I do not want this in my collection, so should I sell it on ebay. I would surely make it clear about the cancellation not being original and specify about the three stroke pen cancel. Or should I keep it off the streets so a buyer won't try to buy it and pass it on as a fancy green cancel? Thanks again for sharing this information. Robert |

Welcome to the community, there are some great folks here. The tool to use is a web site caller RetroReveal at http://retroreveal.orgMy opinion that it is ok to sell as long as you properly describe the stamp as having a faked cancel over a cleaned manuscript cancel. Don |

I got this stamp on ebay several years ago for about $22.00. I bought it because I thought it had a green fancy cancel and thought it was cool because I thought it was original. Not the case so I don't want it anymore. Oh well..... Well I guess I will put this back on ebay......with a clear description of the cancellations |
