Hi all,

hoping for some help.

this foreign cover send from the UK (i think at least, it says steamer via liverpool) to usa.

its 1853 cover, but there are a total of 5 cancellations on it, 3 front and 2 back side.

1. a nice light green 3 cents, not sure from were
2. a dark green one, thats over stamped by the black one, I can see the letters N.Y. and 53 in green
3. the black new york cancellation. it has A. PCKT in it (what does that mean?) and wondering waht the 24 stand for, bit much for postage ?
4 and 5. on the back sre 2 smaller stamped markings, 1 in red and 1 in green. what are they? and were do they originate from?

all help much appreciated

Your cancel #2 is the origin postmark from somewhere in the UK the 53 is part of the year date 1853 there is a "9" above the 53, so probably originated on July 9.
Your cancels #4 and #5 on the back are UK transit markings the red marking July 10 1853 and the second is Liverpool July 11 1853.
At Liverpool it was put on an American Packet rather than the British Cunard Line. The US - GB treaty allocated the treaty rate of 24 cents as 3 cents UK inland, 16 cents sea postage, and 5 cents US inland postage. Since this cover was carried by an American Packet, the US got to keep 21 cents (16+5) and the UK got 3 cents. Since this is an unpaid letter the accountancy mark (your cancel #1) tells the US to pay 3 cents to the UK
Finally, your cancel #3 is the New York exchange office marking rating the letter 24 cents due and stating that it arrived on an American Packet.

The sailing information for your cover is in Dick Winter's book North Atlantic Mail Sailings - from the sailing dates, your letter was carried on the Collins Line steamship Arctic which departed Liverpool on July 13, 1853 and arrived New York on July 23, 1853

Letters carried by the Collins Line are less common than letters carried by the Cunard Line, but are not rare.
